How to Have A-List Arms--Or Maybe Not

Just hours after the 62nd Emmy awards show was over I received a notice about how I could Get A-List Arms Like Hollywoods Leading Ladies. As if I, too, could have arms like January Jones (age 32), who seemed to have extra muscles tucked into the cones on the front and back of that blue Versace gown, and Eva Longoria (age 35), who probably weighs what I did in grade school.

Apparently, you have to do cardio in combination with diet and weight training to tone your arms. This is not news. And you have to switch up your routine try jogging for 20-30 minutes one day, elliptical another, and the rowing machine another day. Also, not rocket science.

Another suggestion for A-List Arms is to start boxing, which sounds appealing. I wouldnt have these bat wings if I had hit everyone who ever made me so mad I went out and had a lovely French raisin brioche as my second breakfast, or several helpings of lasagna to weight me down so I didnt fly out of my chair and pound the idiot suggesting that I go to the gym and lose some weight in my spare time.

Im also intrigued by the prospect that plyometrics is a legitimate tack to take for A-List Arms, but only because most of my friends wouldnt know what it is. Basically it goes back to grade school sports like jump roping and throwing a ball back and forth, only using a medicine ball. Of course, bicep and tricep curls and push-ups and push-downs are a given.

It doesnt seem that hard to warrior up the arm flab. So why are so many middle-aged women jiggly down there?Maybe because weve raised children, struggled with our marriages, risen in our careers and changed careers more than once, weve divorced, had to take care of our aging parents, and perhaps started menopause as well as faced down a wagonload of other discomforts. Exercise is an excellent stress-releaser and fitness tool, but specifically tackling arm wiggles may not have been as much of a priority as other things in our busy lives.Thats why it was reassuring to see Edie Falcos upper arm give a winky wave when she held up her Emmy. Nobody is tougher than Carmella Soprano, Nurse Jackie, or Edie Falco (age 47), who underwent chemotherapy for breast cancer while filming the Sopranos without telling her fellow cast members, and who is raising two adopted children as a single mom.Does Edie Falco have A-List Arms? Maybe not yet, but theyre going to shape up pretty fast if she starts using her four Emmys for weight lifting (they weigh 3 pounds each). In the meantime, if youre over 50 dont wave goodbye when youre on the beach unless youve been hitting a punching bag or rowing (in our mothers day it was called ironing). Or lets say unless you want to. Some women have A-List arms over 50 and some women have killer legs. At any rate, weve all got something 30-somethings dont have, but theyre going to have to wait to find out what it is.Bio note: Judy Kirkwood just turned 60 and does weight resistance exercises, yoga, and zumba, and has killer legs.
