Allergic rhinitis is a condition in which the nasal airways become inflamed, usually due to dust, pollen, or other allergens being inhaled by someone who happens to be sensitive to it. This results in an allergic reaction which usually causes swelling, itching, and increased mucus production. In some people who are especially sensitive it may cause hives or other rashes. It typically occurs either seasonally during peak pollen production periods or throughout the year in children and very sensitive people.

Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction that happens when your immune system overreacts to substances that you have inhaled, such as pollen. The two types of allergic rhinitis are seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis, which occurs year-round. Hay fever is caused by outdoor allergens. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mold.
