Pilates

I have been doing Pilates for some time now and have found it has twofold benefits, those of stretching as well those of resistance training. The slow deliberate movements are similar to yoga and yet you use your body's own weight as resistance to develope strength. I have a Pilates Reformer, but there are mat exercies available as well so you don't need equipment. You actually stand straighter, feel taller (and sometimes you are taller) and breathe differently. All in all, Pilates has been a terrific workout.

I know of a Good Yoga Book

Hi, it's called "Yoga For Idiots", it's blue and orange on the cover. (It's from the idiot's guidebook series, you have probably seen these books in the bookstore they have them on almost any topic.) It's a great book, very informative and I would highly recommend it.

Good Yoga books for exercise

Hi,
I am 48 years old man and I am seeking mental exercise from Yoga to ballance work based stress.
I am doing 4 times a week 40 mins walking for my physical fitness. Now I am interested in having a good exercise for my mind through yoga.
What books you could recommend to be the best ones in guiding you well to do yoga exercises?
Regards,

Not too Keen on Living Arts

Be careful with Living Art's videos. We ordered one of their DVDs, and the audio was so poor that the instructor was completely unintelligible.

We've found that for base beginners, we like the Yoga Zone tapes the best.

SUGGESTIONS ON YOGA TAPES

I have recently become very interested in Yoga but am unable to attend a class due to work schedule. I would like to buy a tape to start off at home, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The choices are endless and quite confusing not to mention expensive.

My Yoga instructor is in her 80's!

After a ten year hiatus, I resumed yoga classes in a new town. Waiting for class to begin, an elderly woman strode in with her mat under her arm, and I thought to myself "isn't it wonderful she's still at it, and look at how it's benefitted her!" It turned out she was the instructor, and although 30 years my senior she gracefully and matter-of-factly performs feats I couldn't do even in my 20's and 30's! I want to be like *her* when I grow up! I cannot say enough good things about yoga--not only does it perceptibly change one's body very rapidly, it cures nagging physical ailments (such as allergies, for me) and does miracles for one's serenity and mental clarity.

fibro and yoga

Dear Eileen:

Your message caught my eye. I work with a woman
who "suffers" greatly from fibromyalgia. Do you
have any sources you might be able to share with
me with reference to treatment of fibromyalgia.
It is very frustrating to watch her suffer day
after day with no real treatment other than her
doctor prescribing anti-depressants. There must
be other ways of treating fibromyalgia. I would
appreciate your sharing your experiences on this
subject.

I wish you well with your journey.
Thank you, Ste

Instruction

Hi. I strongly urge that people who want to practice yoga find a good instructor. That shouldn't be too hard unless you live in a very small town.

A good instructor teaches you how to BREATHE in the correct way. Also a good instructor constantly readjusts you in the postures, either by talking to you or by gently touching you. On your own, you could injure yourself by crowding your neck, attempting too advanced postures before you are ready, etc.

Meditation & the role it plays in todays Modern Society

Meditation. The role it plays in todays Modern society.

Like many people in our world today, I sometimes seem overwhelmed
with the things that I have to do in a day. Work, eat, sleep, play, exercise,
read, watch TV, love, be loved, answer questions, listen to music,
learn something new, and the list goes on and on. How can we fit everything
into our crowded schedules? How can we accomplish anything? The answer
to this question is learning to let go and go with the flow. But I can't let go
of some of the things that are listed here you say. Then learn to Meditate
and your path will be easier. But I don't know how to Meditate you say.
I will teach you how.

First you must find some time and a place where you can be alone in silence.
That means no T.V. or radio and no distractions. Next you must find a
comfortable chair to sit in. Once these two items are found, you can begin.

Start by closing your eyes and noticing how tense your body really is. Start
to let go of these tensions one by one by relaxing that part of your body.
Focus your concentration on that part of the body that has the most tension
and let go of that tension first. Take deep breaths and then let those breaths
out slowly until the tension is gone. Once you have done this for your entire
body, then concentrate on your breathing. Notice how calm it has become.

After this initial session, you will find that you have a renewed sense of energy
and you will feel that you can accomplish anything. In fact, you will be able
to get more done. This way you can squeeze more life out of life in our
Modern society.

If you like to hear more on this topic and how to squeeze more Life out of Life
send an e-mail to me requesting that you join my e-zine called Yogaerobics.
You will learn more about Meditation, Yoga, Aerobics, Weight Training and
general all around Mind and Body Fitness.

Great tape

Just came across this posting about yoga. I inadvertantly ordered a set of tapes (12 Wk Shape up) from Time Warner years ago and one of the tapes is labeled Stretch and Strenthen w/Elle McFerson. This tape is actually a beginner yoga tape and a tape that one can build on. I know the tape so well that now I put it on to guide me through my positions (I also hold them much longer now), and now my movements are very fluid a dance like. If you bug Time Warner you can probably have them dig it up and rerelease it. I've turned friends on to it and they also found it a great way to begin.

To BettyMcBride re:yoga exercises

Hi Betty,
I recommend checking your local community education resources. The fall session of yoga classes began here just last night; it is so energizing and relaxing! AND we are encouraged to make the techniques part of our lives. The instructor teaches so that we know what to do when we get home. She has an accepting, encouraging attitude which creates a wonderful environment for learning. I began yoga this past summer and find it healing for body and soul. Peace and health to you. Nancy Gail.

There are lots out there but I like Lillias Yoga and You which is available through a local video store andd sometimes the library. Suggest you try that way before buying one. YOGA TAPES

My favourite Yoga tapes are: BEGINNERS - Jane Fonda (many physical levels on the same tape). MORE ADVANCED - Ali MacGraw, which is actually an excellent program with Erich Schiffmann. Have tried many tapes and this is the one I have been doing for several years, it leaves me feeling the best and looking forward to doing it at least three days a week. Would also mention a NEW TAPE, "Yoga for Meditators" with John Friend - a hatha yoga routine specifically designed to help anyone sit for meditation with greater comfort and steadiness. 27 gentle postures that are wonderful for the hips, shoulders and lower back.

Yoga

Several years ago I cured some reacurring back pain with yoga. It changed my life so much I took a yoga teachers training course. Not that I wanted to become a teacher, I just thought it was the best way to learn yoga. Not to long ago I had to take a complete physical. While checking my joints the Dr. asked me what I did. He said I had the flexiblity of a 20 year old. Yoga works, give it a go.

For those concerned about the spititual aspects of
yoga don't be. Those are only offered to those who are interested.

This next part is a commercial.

At the teachers traing course I saw that yoga is not taught like it is written about. The postures in Yoga books are almost always grouped by muscle type or starting position. However when yoga is taught the teacher usually takes a posture from each muscle group to give you a balanced program. This leaves you flipping through the book while you try to learn the postures. Take a look at how I solved this problem. It's called Yoga Cards published by Ten Speed Press.

A committment is all it takes

Yoga is great for everything--body, mind and spirit.

A good way start something you've never tried before is to start small. Learn one pose that covers the major muscles such as the Half Moon posture, or the Sun Salutation. Then commit to practicing that one pose everyday for 10 minutes. Concentrate on aligning yourself correctly and focusing on the how you feel when you're in the pose. Each day you'll be a little more flexible and a little more focused. And, you'll probably want to learn more.

Learning

I have just been persudaed by a friend to keep her company at an introductory class. We have been to 3 classes now. I've never been into sports or exercise or alternative lifestyles or meditation or stuff, but I think I could get hooked on this. It's the making 10 minutes everyday I find difficult though. What I have been doing is trying to pay attention to my basic posture during the day... and when I get home do some stretches and breathing to ease my poor old aching computer/work stress neck muscles. If all I achieve is some relief in this area, it would be worth it!

I have been taking a Yoga class for three months. I started looking for alternative pain relief methods for postherpetic neuralgia.......I hate the side effects of strong pain medications. I take a weekly class and try to do my yoga exercises once a day. Not only do the yoga movements lessen the burning pain, they also have given me greater flexibility. Highly recommend to everyone of any age. I'm 56 and wish I had begain yoga thirty years ago.

I would like to learn about

I would like to learn about yoga and i am new to thirdage. Is there a video that would help me to begin? I am 62 have a bad knee which I can't lean on, but I walk and play golf as much as it can. I find walking helps, but I believe I need more stretching.
I also do water exercises at the YMCA. I find I can't do exercises on my own. I do need help for my knee.
The doctor doesn't seem to help.
