Yoga,let's have more of that

Yoga, let's have more of that in your
newsletters.

I have studied and taught

I have studied and taught hatha yoga for twelve years.
I would like to learn more about ashtanga yoga and how
to integrate it into my hatha classes. I live far away from any yoga centers and find it difficult to
get to update seminars, particularily in the winter when the weather is so quickly variable.

Would appreciate any info on

Would appreciate any info on Yoga. Recent work out attempts (post surgery) resulted in constant strains and muscle pulls until I rediscovered Yoga in my 50's. Did it all through my 20's. I have no problems with muscle pulls now, as I have greatly improved spinal alignment and flexibility. Makes quite a difference. Might also consider Chi Gung and Ti Chi info in future.

I am new to Third Age, and

I am new to Third Age, and to Yoga. I am just beginning both . I have tried some basic Kundalini Yoga and am very interested in learning more. Please have Devin do a column in your newsletter. This would be of such benefit to folks that cannot excercise in the traditional manner. I for one. I am 53, overweight and have begun to experience arthritis, and it is painful to do aerobic excercise. My little experience with Yoga is that it is not as strenuous on the joints. Please welcome Devin, Thanks,Mikied

I love Yoga but have always

I love Yoga but have always had bad knees that don't bend well. I worry that many of the Yoga postures will only hurt my knees. I'd like to know if that's true.

Am a firm believer and have practiced yoga in addition to other forms of exercise. Find its a real help to alleviate stress and helps keep my copd in check.

Think that it should be a life requirement for anyone of any age. It is a discipline and makes for mindful meditation.

Just joined third age and am

Just joined third age and am in process of prowsing everything on it.

Yes! Please, I would love to read everything/anything I can on Yoga. Does anyone remember the "old" instruction book "28 days to perfect yoga"? I've used this on/off for years. Am attempting to get into it again as it really does work-not just firming the body, but best of all, for calming the mind.

My practice of doing about

My practice of doing about half an hour of Hatha Yoga every morning goes a long way to preventing muscle injuries and maitaining a modicum of flexibility in the face of emerging osteo-arthritis. In short I am sold on the benefits.

I have an 84 year old mother who has osteoporosis and ostearthritis. I would like to persuade her to start doing Yoga to relieve her growing tendency to immobility. Can anyone point me to some persuasive and well-illustrated books that I might have her read to start out with?

Thank you.

Please do include Yoga in

Please do include Yoga in the Third Age Newsletter.
I used to do Hatha Yoga faithfully, and then got away
from it...40hr a week job, night school for 7 years,
raising a daughter, etc. But those were reasons to
keep practicing (not resons to quit), I now realize in
my Third Age. I do walk for one hour every morning
from 6:30am to 7:30am, but I know yoga would be an
enhancement to my exercise routine.

Yoga Yoga means "oneness."

Yoga
Yoga means "oneness." It is a discipline interpreted differently by many different schools of yoga. For most of these schools, the purpose of yoga is to become united with God by becoming "Self-realized" and abandoning the behavior patterns or "samskaras" that keep us from being really free.
I really enjoyed Hatha Yoga, which is a physical discipline designed to aid people in relaxing and becoming ready for meditation. At present, I do a minimum amount of Hatha Yoga, but I practice and teach meditation (when I am not physically ill). I also publish a set of great web links, including links to many different sources of information on meditation. Or, if you prefer, you may purchase meditation books.
I support inclusion of material on yoga in the newsletter. Any way people learn about yoga or hatha yoga is beneficial!Peter

I have been doing yoga off and on for years and can really feel the difference when I have been doing it for awhile. More flexible, less stressed, more energized. I too have a hard time finding classes in my community. I have the Austin video, but would like to find others that are good.

video for beginners in Yoga

Here are 2 tapes for beginners:Yog Journal's "Practice for Beginners" with Patricia Walden - one of the major players in the yoga videos. This is from a publisher called Healing Arts Publishing Inc.
Another from the same company is called "Yoga for the Young at Heart" with Susan Winter Ward- a 50 minute tape. This is a bit less intimidating although both are excellant. Phone number of this publisher is 1-800-2-living.
I also used to use it but do not anymore.

Yoga Journal

Hi, I also am an ex 60's/70's Yoga fan who took it up again recently in Middle Age. The Pat Walden , Yoga Journal tape has helped me improve my flexibility tremendously. It has helped a lot with back problems, and fatigue from standing. Its an excellent back stretcher. I'm trying to keep it going about 3days a week. really good for hip/lower back strength. Can even do just the standing exercises.
I've been able to squeeze them in on the job, when no one was around.

Gee, we all seemed to have

Gee, we all seemed to have enjoyed Yoga "years ago", when these are the years we would benefit the most! I bought a tape last year, "Denise Austin's Yoga Essentials", really good, but am ashamed to say, I've only used it twice. This forum has encouraged me to at least dust it off and put it on the coffee table!

Me, too! I also did yoga years ago and thought it was great. I'd welcome an opportunity to take it up again. Also I'd love to get my husband involved as I think he would benefit from the breathing exercises but am having trouble motivating him. Hope to see more interest here.

I would be very interested in discussions on Yoga. I "did" Yoga many years ago with great benefits but have been away from it and have forgotten everything I knew. Would be interested in knowing some good video tapes for the novice. Thanks.
