The disease is named after a German doctor named Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, he described changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness and he found abnormal clumps which are now called amyloid plagues and tangled bundles of fibers which are now called neurofibrillary tangles.
