America's Happiest Woman Has It All

What Makes A Woman Happy?

What makes a woman happy?   According  to  new data published in “USA Today,” the key to happiness , at least for women 45 to 55, appears to be career fulfillment, a loving family, supportive friends and a healthy income  The newspaper asked Healthways, a well-being improvement firm that partnered with the Gallup poll, to pinpoint  what contributes to contentment for women in this age group, America’s largest demographic.

Among their findings:

•Work matters The happiest of these boomer women tend to be work-oriented and successful at their careers with family incomes of $120,000 and above.  Money is not a top priority but they concede it is important

•A majority of these contented women are white. And they are California girls, living away from big cities, involved in their communities, and often, a short  distance from their work.

•Their marriages are “good” and they are happy with their family lives. Their kids may have already left home and they are not yet caregivers for their older parents or relatives.

•Exercise is important to them. They average 30 minutes of exercise six days a week.

•They are healthy eaters, too. And, unlike many women, they are not overweight or are concerned with dieting.

•They are more religious or spiritual than most. And they have a “positive” attitude about the challenges in their lives.  •They have a network of supportive friends. The paper profiles Mary Claire Orenic of Manhattan Beach, dubbing her perhaps “the happiest woman in America.”  Married to “a man I adore,” the mother of one,  says she was a slacker in school but that work turned her into an “achiever.”  She has an MBA she earned  going to school at night while working at a Silicon Valley start-up.  She now is the director of business development at Siemens Healthcare.  Nowadays she lives in a 2,300-square-foot house, telecommutes a couple of days a week, plays volley ball on the beach with her son, who is being recruited by several college.  And, oh, she only weighs 115 pounds.  The newspaper, describing a typical at-home evening with the family  reports,” [The Orenics]  favorite activity is family dinner on the deck they built, where Chris [ her husband] grills fish and veggies while their son plays guitar.”    You can only wish Mary Claire more happiness but maybe a tad less smugness.   Let us know here if you think this study was helpful.
