When the temperature drops, the first thing you grab is a cozy sweater.
But clothing is only one element of a seasonal shift - it's time to reassess your beauty routine. Your skin and hair will soon be affected by the drop in temperature and the changing moisture levels this fall.
Plus, the colors and trends also change. This fall, it's all about a punchy pout, blue eyes and squeaky clean skin. It's officially time to revamp your regime.
Fresh fall skin
The summer likely did a number on your skin, especially for those with oily or problem skin.
Tulsan Heidi Jenkins said her skin started giving her trouble in her 30s, so she began experimenting with essential oils. Her hobby soon turned into an organic skin-care line, called Skin & Bones. Now, it is sold at some 50 retailers nationally, including at Fred Segal in California and at Chrome in Tulsa.
"Most of our skin-care products are full of alcohol and water and they evaporate immediately, so the majority of it goes away," Jenkins said. "Often the products left in our skin care are chemical- based, and our bodies don't really know what to do with it so we try to reject it."
Skin & Bones, which is offered locally at Chrome, is made primarily with jojoba oil, which is obtained from desert shrubs.
"With beauty care, it's a good idea to strip away all the chemical products and try an organic product for a couple of days with nothing else," she said. "Give your skin a break, especially when the seasons change."
Loud lips
The fall is time to perfect that pout with bold lips.
"Red lips are hot this season," said Rachael Evington, at the Bare Escentuals bareMinerals counter of Dillard's Woodland Hills. "It's the fall trend."
She said a popular shade of rouge this fall is bareMinerals Pretty Amazing Lip Color in the shade called Strength.
"Strength is the perfect shade of red for anyone. Couple the red lips with a nude eye, lined with a charcoal pencil and a light pink blush on the apple of the cheek," she said. "This look is more than quick and easy - in less than 15 minutes you will make a statement that will set the trend for fall."
Another lip shade of red that is popping this fall is from Mary Kay's Beauty That Counts creme lipsticks. From now through Dec. 15, $1 from every purchase of the three shades - Give Joy (peach), Give Dreams (tropical pink) and Give Hope (a shimmery red) - will be donated to the Mary Kay Foundation in an effort to end domestic violence.
The eyes have it
On days when red lips aren't the right fit, a smoky eye always does the trick.
Saks Fifth Avenue is introducing a Christian Dior makeup counter, which opened this week.
"The Dior Blue Tie collection is a playful mix of masculine and feminine," said Amanda Viles, director of marketing. "It's a refreshing modern take on the nighttime beauty look."
With deep, midnight blue as a backdrop, the collection includes smoky eye shadows, navy eye liners and even nail color - navy blue is certainly the hot nail polish trend this fall, keeping with past seasons' dark polish trends but lightening it up just a touch.
