Bilirubin, an essential component in blood, can protect against respiratory diseases including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and even all causes of death in general, a new study says. But the protective action kicks in only when the levels of bilirubin are in the high range of normal.
The study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was conducted by the Health Improvement Network in England.
Bilirubin interacts with another blood compound, hemoglobin, and produces powerful antioxidant activity (antioxidants are cancer fighters). However, an excessive level of bilirubin can lead to illnesses like cirrhosis or acute hepatitis.
