Muscle cramps, particularly in the legs and feet, are a source of serious and recurring discomfort for many people especially postmenopausal women. But researchers say theres an easy and effective way to relax the cramp. A quick pinch of the upper lip a technique known as acupinch, which is related to acupuncture and acupressure has proved to be up to 90 percent effective.
The method, discovered by Milton F. Allen, a chronic sufferer of muscle spasms and now Director of the Acupinch Outreach Center in Atlanta, is simplicity itself. At the first sign of any muscle cramping, immediately compress the area above the upper lip and under the nose between your thumb and forefinger. Maintain a constant pressure for twenty to thirty seconds, longer if necessary. The pain should subside and the muscles relax within moments of the pinch.
Although doctors are at loss to explain the reason for acupinchs success, they agree that it works. Their opinion is substantiated by the experience of professional athletes and team trainers.
Caveat: If your cramps persist and recur frequently, see your doctor.
