What Do You Know About Brain Health?

Our brains define us. They express our thoughts, ideas and emotions. They store our memories and allow us to feel.

Not long ago, it was widely believed that if our brains slowed down, there wasn't much we could do about it. Not anymore. Scientists have now proven what many people have long intuited: that we can take steps to keep our brains fit and functional -- regardless of age.

1. You only use 10 percent of your brain.

FICTION: You use your entire brain.

The 10-percent myth has been around for a long time. It is not certain how this falsehood began, but it has been strengthened over the past century by misinterpretations of neuroscience discoveries and unsubstantiated quotes by both scientists and laypeople alike.

The truth is that we use virtually all of our brain every day.

Let's say, for example, that as you are reading this article, you are eating a sandwich. As you are reading, the frontal lobes in your cerebral cortex are engaged in thinking and reasoning. You are enjoying your delicious sandwich thanks to your parietal lobes, which are responsible for taste, texture and smell of food. The occipital lobes help to process how you see the words on this Web page, and the temporal lobes help you process what you hear -- like the click of your mouse.

Meanwhile, you just blinked because of your motor area, and it is because of your cerebellum that you are able to hold the sandwich in one hand and read this article on your computer, as well as anything else you're doing right now that calls for balance and coordination -- like sitting. Without having to think about it, you are breathing, digesting your sandwich and circulating blood, thanks to your brainstem. Your metabolism and hormonal functions, like the ones that control the water and sugar levels in your body, are currently being controlled by your pituitary gland. And if you're sitting on a park bench on a cold wintry day, your hypothalamus is responsible for that fact that you're shivering. You'll remember what you're reading due to your hippocampus, whose job it is to transfer short-term to long-term memory. It also enables you to remember that the point of this elaborate example is that you use much more than 10 percent of your brain.Fact or Fiction?2. A person's personality displays a right-brain or left-brain dominance.FICTION: The two sides are intricately co-dependent.This myth holds that a right-brain person is generally creative, intuitive and artsy, while a left-brain person is more of a problem-solver, more linear and more logical. The myth arose from genuine science, but new imaging technology has shown that the brain is more interdependent than once thought.
The myth probably took root in the 1800s, when scientists discovered that an injury to one side of the brain often caused a loss of specific abilities. For example, spatial abilities seemed to reside in the right side of the brain, with language in the left. The myth gained ground in the 1960s, when scientists studied epilepsy patients who had surgery to sever the connection between the two hemispheres. These researchers showed that when they couldn't communicate, the two sides of the brain could be unaware of one another -- and even respond differently to stimuli. For example, when one patient was asked what he wanted to do, his left brain responded with "draftsman," but his right brain with "automobile racer."But more recently, brain scan technology has revealed that the hemispheres' roles are not quite so cut-and-dried as once thought. The two hemispheres are in fact highly complementary. For example, language processing, once believed to be left-hemisphere only, is now understood to take place in both hemispheres: The left side processes grammar and pronunciation, while the right processes intonation. Similarly, experiments have shown that the right hemisphere does not work in isolation with regard to spatial ability: The right hemisphere seems to deal with a general sense of space, while the left hemisphere deals with objects in specific locations.
What remains true is that the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa. What this means is that an injury to the left side of the brain (such as a left-hemisphere stroke) can cause damage to the other side of the body (such as right-leg paralysis).Fact or Fiction?3. Brain damage is always permanent.FICTION: The brain can repair or compensate for certain losses, and even generate new cells.It used to be believed that each person was born with a finite number of brain cells, so if you damaged any of them, you operated on a deficit for the rest of your life. Less than 20 years ago, even major players in the neuroscience community believed that the brain could not generate new cells. Similarly, many scientists believed that the brain was unalterable; once it was "broken," it could not be fixed. But recent discoveries have convinced most scientists to think differently. Evidence now shows that the brain remains "plastic" throughout life: It can rewire or change itself in response to new learning. Under certain circumstances, the brain can even create new cells through a process called neurogenesis.To show brain cell regeneration, in 1998, scientists placed a substance that identifies dividing cells in a group of terminal cancer patients. Postmortem examinations found that the substance was attached to new cells in the hippocampus. This discovery not only refutes the "we are born with a finite number of brain cells" myth, but it also raises hope for victims with brain injury caused from either diseases or trauma.
Fact or Fiction?4. Your brain can physically grow and change based on your experiences.FACT: Specialized learning can shape the brain by engaging its natural "plasticity."Here's an example. Using brain imaging techniques, Dr. Frackowiak andhis team reviewed the brain activity of a group of London cab drivers.They chose London's cab drivers because of the intensive navigationaltraining they must go through in order to pass the qualifying exam. Thescientists compared the cabbies' brain images to those of a comparablegroup, who did not have similar navigational experience, and foundstructural differences in the part of the brain that is responsible forspatial and navigational reasoning: the hippocampus. The posteriorhippocampi were larger in the cabbie group than those in the noncabbiegroup.Further investigation proved that the structural difference was a result of the specific navigational training, and that local plasticity can take place -- that is, the brain can physically change -- as a result of increasing environmental exposure.Fact or Fiction?5. It's an old wives' tale that fish is "brain food."FICTION: Fish -- specifically fish oils -- are good for your brain.A study published in the Archives of Neurology found that eating fish at least once a week slows cognitive decline. This is because fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain functioning.
