Easy way to go green
Easy way to go green
Hi All,
The easiest way I know to go green is also the simplest: spend less. Regardless of the products you buy, the car you drive, or the places you go, the less you spend, the smaller your impact will be on the environment.
Does that mean sacrifice? Not really. Just setting priorities.
Think of all the things in your home that seemed so wonderful when you first bought them? How long did that good feeling last?
Think about that vacation at the expensive theme park. Would you kids have been just as happy spending a few days at a nearby (and much less expensive) amusement park or hiking with you through a wonderful state park?
Would a 42-inch TV really make reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond funnier?
I think that too often we let advertising writers make our decisions for us.
Think for yourself -- you'll probably discover there's a whole world of wonderful experiences and products that don't get hyped but that still deliver a lot of value.
The benefits of spending less go beyond saving the earth, of course. You'll also worry less about whether you have enough money to live on. And you'll avoid many, many disappointments with products and experiences that could never live up to their hype.
But mostly, by spending less, you'll be leaving your grandchildren a cleaner planet and a more beautiful universe.

Spend less - use less - waste less
I wholeheartedly agree! One of the biggest energy wasters and polluters is OVERconsumption. If we all only took what we really needed, then there would be less waste and pollution in the landfills, ocean and air.
I have cut down on spending and comsuming so much and my waistline is better for it too. (But, that's probably too simple of a solution, so I doubt it will work)

Back to a simpler time
I think current conditions will force most of us to rethink our lifestyles and look back to doing things "the old way" sooner or later. I wonder how many remember the old clothes lines in the yard? Hanging white laundrey items out in the sun bleaches pretty well and would eliminate part of the tons of plastic jugs in the landfill. I remember my Mother and Grandmother saved everything that was reuseable in some way, rather than thowing things away. I'm sure that was a hold-over habit from the Depression Years of the 30's and eaqrly 40s when there was little or no money to purchase many items again. Not like today when "the card" is so conventient. But, is the stress of the monthly payment/payments really worth it?
My Mother and I still do some of the re-cycling of items or doing things the old way. For instance, we wash inside and dry our zip loc bags to use again. It is time consuming, yes; but money saving, AND again, less plastic in the landfills. Dried out bread is not thrown out. We used it to make meatloafs with, which are then stored in the freezer for later. Styrofoam meat trays are washed and re-used for separating large family packs of meat for smaller meals. Those bargain packages are cheaper for one or two people in the long run. I also use some of the deeper styrofoam trays for keeping my home made egg noodles in to have ready for large family gatherings. And, of course, for those who are able to have one.... the good old veggie garden. Much healthier foods and I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment of preserving my own. I look at all of those jars and think, "Well done!" :) Don't we all need to feel that aout ourselves from time to time?
