How to discover and do the work you love after 40

How to discover and do the work you love after 40

After 40 is no time to settle for just a job- In mid-life there is a sudden realization that one's life is half lived and a sense of urgency can be felt- This is good. This new insight can drive one to create more fulfillment and joy around one's life.

Jobs just leads to retirement and then death. In this forum we will discuss and share a new model to find one's vocation which you never have to stop doing until you stop breathing. With vocation, you can now cash in all those retirement savings as now there will never be a reason to ever retire!!

Searching for work?

Right now we have several articles on the site that are about looking for work in midlife. (Is Age Getting in The Way of Your Work?) Is anyone looking for work right now? What would you be interested in reading on ThirdAge?

Let's see - 10000 people

Let's see - 10000 people were laid off from my company this year alone... a lot of people are looking for work right now. The majority of the 10000 are 50+ years old. One friend sent out 1800 resumes and got no response. So he shortened his resume, to look younger, last month. Got 10 interviews after that - but said he knew from the initial reaction when he went for the interviews that he would get no offers. And he hasn't. These are highly trained technical people whose jobs were off-shored. IT is going through what manufacturing went through - thousands of boomers looking for jobs in an industry where no one wants to hire anyone over 30, and jobs being off-shored in droves. How about a serious article to address jobs for people 50+ - not one that just quotes the AARP site, which doesn't have advice that helps IT boomers who have been laid off. Most of the articles I have read on this problem are very trite. Look at www.allianceibm.org for some real stories from real people.

To Write or Not to Write

Hi, to answer your question PMullaly, it's not impossible to make money blogging, but your blog has to really touch a nerve and get lots of traffic. It's a hard thing to create a voice that stands out in the midst of the millions of blogs. Check out mediabistro, they have a lot of good info on the business of writing (and media chatter) and also take a look at Zenhabits.net by Leo Babauta (he's a frequent contributor on ThirdAge. He's developed a very successful blog in about two years. He also does a blog about writing (Write to Done) that has a lot of good tips.
Hope this helps.

Finding the Work You Love - Is it Time to Take the Leap?

Most of my life I have been a writer. Unpaid, but a writer nonetheless. I've written several books and articles, only one or two published in obscure places, still I write. Recently I discovered blogging. Here is my chance to self-publish... but can I make any money at it? Could this be my chance to do what I love and still make money? Recently I found a mentor, Yaro Starak who teaches online classes on creating membership sites with your blog. I'm on the edge as to whether I should join. Any ideas?

Is it possible?

I hope this thread will pick up on activity, as I think it's really important. Especially now, when times are so hard for finding work, I'm wondering if the question has to be re-formulated. Can we really hope to find a job we love, or is there a way to help us through whatever job we can find, to create a better life for ourselves? I will add more if the thread picks up...
