ABC Does 5 Part Series on Care-Giving

Starting tonight, World News with Diane Sawyer is running a special series on the issues surrounding aging relatives and those who care for them. The series is appropriately called, Families on the Brink: What To Do About Mom & Dad?

One of the most difficult responsibilities families face is taking care of relatives who can no longer take care of themselves. It has been projected that boomers will spend more time taking care of their parents than they did raising their children. Thats a big chunk of time. In the week-long series Diane Sawyer and several ABC News correspondents will take an in-depth look at the sensitive and serious issues caregivers face.

First, Diane Sawyerwill sit down for a discussion with four different people, all who are leading voices on the issue and who can hopefully provide new perspectives on the realities of caring for aging family members.

Among the people she will sit down with is Martha Stewart, whoteamed up with Mount Sinai Medical Center to open the Martha Stewart Center for Living, which specializes in elder care and it is dedicated to her mother; Neil Resnick, M.D., who is the chief of geriatric medicine and gerontology and director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Pittsburgh;Marie A. Bernard, M.D., a noted geriatrician and educator from the University of Oklahoma who was named deputy director of the National Institute on Aging in 2008;and Virginia Morrisis the author ofHow to Care for Aging Parents.

Other issues in the series that will be touched upon are The Family Fallout, an examination of the turmoil that can ensue when siblings are taking care of their parents (Should you make a plan before this happens?); The Meaning of Home, a look at the movement to bring caregivers and amenities into the home instead of moving the patient out; The Time to Take Away the Keys, which examines when the appropriate time to do this and how to go about it; and The Medicine, a segment on the safest way to streamline medicines.
