10 Funny Boomer Women
Who said you have to be young to be funny? There are so many women in Hollywood who have cracked us up for decades with their funny movie roles, comical talk shows and amazing one-liners.
Here are 10 famous boomer women who still have us slapping our knees: -
Kathy Griffin
Griffin, 50, is another funny woman with brash humor. This self-proclaimed “D-list celebrity” even produced a reality show about her climb up the Hollywood ladder called ‘My Life on the D-List’. The show won her two Emmy Awards.
In her stand-up comedy routines, Griffin mocks herself along with other celebrities. She said in an interview, “I'm genuinely a fan of most of the people I trash in the act. I focus on making fun of people for their behavior. I'm not so into making fun of someone for the way they look, or something that's out of their control.” -
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Louis-Dreyfus was an ‘SNL’ cast member from 1982 to 1985—at age 21, she became one of the youngest female cast members in the show’s history. She joined ‘Seinfeld’ in 1990 and became widely known for her role as the whiny Elaine Benes. During her nine-year role, she appeared in all but three episodes.
In 2005, Louis-Dreyfus was cast in the title role of another sitcom, ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine.’ In just the first season, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Recently, Louis-Dreyfus, 50, filmed a satirical comedy pilot titled ‘Veep’ that is set in the office of a factional U.S. Vice President. HBO picked it up as a series, which will air in 2012. -
Lily Tomlin
Tomlin, 71, began her comedy career in 1969 on the sketch comedy show ‘Laugh-In’. In 1971, she got the nickname “America’s New Queen of Comedy” after being the first woman performing solo in Broadway show, ‘Appearing Nitely.’ Then Tomlin starred in another one-woman Broadway show in 1985 called ‘The Search For Signs of Intelligent LLily Tomlinife in the Universe’, which was written by her long-time life partner, writer and producer Jane Wagner. The show won Tomlin a Tony Award.
Tomlin also won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 1972 for ‘This Is A Recording.’
Movie-wise, she’s starred in ‘The Incredible Shrinking Woman’ (1981), alongside Steve Martin in ‘All Of Me’ (1984), ‘I Heart Huckabees’ (2004) and in the ensemble comedy elegy ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ (2006). Her most recent film appearance was in the 2009 detective comedy, ‘The Pink Panther 2.’ -
Rosie O'Donnell
O’Donnell, 49, got her big break in comedy when she appeared on the talent show ‘Star Search’ at the age of 20. She also toured clubs and bars as a stand-up comedienne from 1979-1984.
In 1996, O’Donnell began her own talk show, ‘The Rosie O’Donnell Show’. The show won multiple Emmy Awards and cracked audiences up for six years. She later started hosting the daytime show ‘The View’ in 2006, providing a newsworthy but still entertaining voice to the show.
Most recently, O’Donnell has appeared in the Broadway show called ‘Love, Loss and What I Wore’ and portrayed Judge Madeline Summers in the legal comedy ‘Drop Dead Diva.’ -
Joan Rivers
Rivers, an Emmy Award-winning comedienne, is widely known for her abrasive manner and heavy New York accent. From ‘The Joan Rivers Show’ to ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ to ‘Fashion Police’, she keeps us laughing with hilarious jabs at other celebrities, mostly related to their questionable fashion choices.
We love that Rivers, 77, can take it as well as she can dish out—in 2009, a handful of celebs poked fun at her on a ‘Comedy Central Roast.’ -
Carol Burnett
Burnett, 78, is well known and loved for her sense of humor and famous Tarzan yelp. Burnett began her career in 1956 with a star role on in the short-lived sitcom ‘Stanley’, opposite Buddy Hackett. Soon enough, Burnett began her own variety show, ‘The Carol Burnett Show’, in 1967. Filled with comedy sketches, sons, dances and film parodies, the show won or was nominated for an Emmy Award all eleven years that it was on the air.
Just last year, Burnett made a special gust appearance on the award-winning musical comedy ‘Glee’, -
Lisa Kudrow
Kudrow, 47, is best know for her role as the spacey Phoebe Buffay on ‘Friends’, a role that landed her an Emmy and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Her comic film roles include ‘Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion’ (1997), ‘Hanging Up’ (2000), ‘Marci X’ (2003), ‘Analyze This’ (1999), its sequel ‘Analyze That’ (2002) and ‘Easy A’ (2010). For her most recent role, Kudrow reunited with her funny ‘Friends’ co-star, Courteney Cox, on ‘Cougar Town’. Kudrow plays an impatient dermatologist on the show. -
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres, 53, often referred to as the “female Seinfeld” for her observational humor, got started performing stand-up comedy at small clubs and coffee houses. She began touring nationally in the early 1980s and Showtime named her ‘The Funniest Person in America’ in 1982. Her comedy material became fodder for the successful sitcom ‘Ellen’ (1994). During the show’s run, she came out as a lesbian.
In 2003, she launched a daytime talk show, ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ which has since become wildly popular, winning 25 Emmys in its first three seasons. Ellen is known for her fun, playful humor—DeGeneres dances with her audience between commercial breaks, and even hosted her show from a hospital bed when she tore a ligament in her back.
DeGeneres, who continues to host her talk show, also served as a judge on Season 9 of ‘American Idol’ and a guest judge on ‘So You Think You Can Dance?’ -
Whoopi Goldberg
‘Sister Act’(1992), ‘Made In America’ (1993) and ‘Rat Race’ (2001) are just a few of Goldberg’s notable comedy films. Goldberg, 55, is on of the highest paid actresses of her time and is one of few to win an Oscar, Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award.
Whoopi has pretty much covered all the bases with her humor. Aside from film, she hosted the talk shows ‘The Whoopi Goldberg Show’, and is currently a host on ‘The View.'
Goldberg’s ability to make people laugh has also benefited charity—she does work for ‘Comic Relief’, an initiative that strives to create a world free of poverty. -
Joy Behar
Behar, 68, began as a New York-based stand-up comedienne and a radio talk show host. In 1997, Behar became one of the original monitors on ‘The View’ and still remains on the show today.
While Behar is undoubtedly funny, her humor is only for the thick-skinned. Just this past April, when Queen Elizabeth wore a bright yellow outfit to her grandson William’s royal wedding, Behar called her “a bumble bee with a drinking problem” and said that “she looks like a taxi cab—keep that meter running, Queenie.” Ouch!
