Cher rushed to defend her son, the first transgender competitor slated to appear on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." She reacted to a backlash from people vehemently opposed to having Chaz on the show.
Her initial tweet on Wednesday evening said: "lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS!This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it"
Later she posted another message "bet VAST MAJORITY of People will LOVE CHAZ on DWTS ! ... Chaz isn't exactly the 'Gotta Dance Gotta Dance' kinda Guy"
Some fans of "Dancing" have jumped into the fray in favor of Chaz. One wrote: "I never and mean NEVER watch DWTS but will this season to support/vote for (Chaz)."
However the group called One Million Moms, whose mission is to "stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity" in the entertainment media, has launched a campaign to get people to "Email ABC Network and let them know that we will not tolerate these subjects being forced into our homes."
As for Chaz, he tweeted @cher saying "Thanks for all your support mom. The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can."
He also responded to his each of his Twitter followers who chimed in with votes of confidence for him. On Thursday he posted a tweet to everyone: "I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I received from everyone. Thanks so much. I don't listen to the haters, but embrace the love."
