Dolores Hart On The Red Carpet

She is the only nun in the world who kissed Elvis Presley. The former Dolores Hart now Mother Dolores, a 73-year-old Benedictine nun will be back in Hollywood on Oscar night. That’s because an HBO documentary about Mother Delores and  the Abbey of Regina Laudis where she is the mother prioress and spiritual guide is up for an Oscar. The documentary is entitled “God Is Bigger Than Elvis” will be shown on HBO on April 5th.

Hart was a comely ingénue when she starred with Elvis in 1957 in “Loving You,” and in 1958 in “King Creole.”  She also starred in the early 60’s teen favorite “Where the Boys Are” with George Hamilton. Her last screen role was in “Come Fly With Me” in 1963 comedy about flight attendants looking for love back when flight attendants were called stewardesses.

Even during her stint in Hollywood, Hart was a devout Catholic. She first visited the Abbey where she has lived for over forty years when she was twenty one, appearing in a Broadway play, and wanted a few days of rest. Five years later, she was planning to marry in a bridal gown designed by top Hollywood designer  Edith Head when she realized, she has said, she was really in love with God.   She wore her bridal gown and veil when she entered the convent. Her fiancé never married and visited her through the years.

At first her new life was hard and stressful. “I felt I had jumped off a twenty-foot building and landed on my butt,” she recalled. “I had no idea what it meant singing seven times a day, working in the garden, 10 people in one bathroom, and the sternness.”  The documentary shows the current daily activities at the Abbey which is a working farm, where the nuns grow their own food and observe three periods of silence each day. ThirdAge has been fortunate to have visited the Abbey which is in the bucolic town of Bethlehem, Connecticut.  Though only two hours from New York City both the town and the Abbey  are  extremely serene and peaceful. The Abbey, though very simple has an unadorned, wooden church and a small store where the products the nuns make are sold.  The actress Patricia Neal often spent time at the Abbey. Mother Dolores, who remains an Academy member, said  she is happy to go to the Oscars. “I would like to see the academy at its best," she added. "I have such respect for the community, and they have given me a way of being a part of Hollywood within the monastic enclosure. So this will be a wonderful opportunity I certainly will never enjoy again in my lifetime. “
