Demi Moore, who recently split up with Ashton Kutcher, is in the hospital today for “exhaustion.”
But the events that led up to Moore’s hospitalization indicated that there might be something else going on besides sheer tiredness.
"Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health," her publicist said in a statement. “She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends."
Moore, who has appeared extraordinarily gaunt in recent photos, has also dropped out of her latest project: playing Gloria Steinem in a biographical picture of the porn actress Linda Lovelace.
The website TMZ reported that an ambulance was called to Moore’s house on Monday night and took her to the hospital. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department indicated that paramedics were at the residence for about half an hour before the trip to the hospital.
TMZ later reported that “sources” indicated that the trouble was substance abuse.
Moore, 49, has had substance abuse problems in the past. In a 1996 article, “People” magazine reported that “drugs and alcohol had taken their toll” on Moore in the early 1980s. She was almost dropped from the classic “St. Elmo’s Fire” movie because of her substance-abuse problems. But, according to People, after director Joel Schumacher told her to clean up her act, she went into rehab and came back sober two weeks later.
