She had several early brushes with the stars.
When she was 9, she appeared on The Colgate Comedy Hour. When she was just 12, she had a role in Alfred Hitchcocks The Wrong Man. Some years later, in 1970, Franklin won a part alongside Lauren Bacall in Applause. The performance won her a Tony nomination and jump-started her career.

She hit it big with One Day At A Time.
She played divorcee Ann Romano, iconic to the divorced families of the 70s and feminists. It was very, very important not to rely on a man to make the decisions. That was always the fight with the character of David Kane with Ann Romano, said Franklin.

The show wasnt always easy.
It was a family. The difficulties we had, said Franklin, was [sic] adjusting to the fact that Mack [Mackenzie Phillips] was sick. That was a hard time for everybody. Phillips struggled with addiction from Season Three of One Day At A Time on and was eventually asked to leave.

She was born in L.A., but fell in love with N.Y.
A Californian during her early life, she was later wooed by the East Coast. "When I was 16, I was an exchange student in Greece," she said in an L.A. Times interview. "When I came back, I stopped in New York. I loved the theater. Since then, I've been on the stage in New York many times."

Shes directed, too.
Franklin helmed The Munsters Today in 1989. Many years earlier, shed appeared in a episode herself, and told the L.A. Times, "The weird thing is I did an episode of 'The Munsters' when I was 18. I was a regular person on the show. I wasn't in makeup. I can't remember the role, but whenever it's rerun, I get mail."

Her husband died last year.
He was producer Marvin Minoff, known for working with David Frost on his groundbreaking series of interviews with Richard Nixon. He died at age 78, after he and Franklin had been married for 29 years. He was her second husband; her first marriage, to Ron Sossi, lasted from 1967 to 1970.

She never had children herself.
But she was very maternal with her on-screen children, and often gave them advice off the set. Valerie Bertinelli, thinking back on their relationship during a cast reunion, said, I remember you inviting me out to your apartment in New York and having a wonderful conversation about sex... I was still a virgin then. Franklin nodded, and said, There was a real sense of, on set, those are my kids.
