Soaring Sister
How many other actresses could have pulled off the role of a 90-pound nun, Sister Bertrille, who flew around the island of Puerto Rico with the aid of her headgear? Thanks to her pixie-ish appeal, though, Sally made The Flying Nun work for three seasons, from 1967 to 1970. Besides starring in episodes like Days of Nuns and Roses, Sally recorded a soundtrack album that included the numbers Count to Ten and Turn on the Sunshine and Im So Glad I Can Fly. But despite Nuns success, Sally later told interviewers that she hated it because she was treated disrespectfully by directors of several episodes. One, she recalled, grabbed her shoulders and moved her into place as if she was a prop. The series ended when the creative team ran out of places where Sister Bertrille could fly to (come to think of it, Puerto Rico is kind of small).

Growing Up
Although The Flying Nun was an unpleasant experience for her, Sally did get something good out of it: Her costar, Margaret Sherwood, encouraged her to take acting lessons. Moving beyond the cutie-pie role of Sister Bertrille was hard, though, because she was still seen as a girl, not a woman: In 1971, when Sally was 25, she played a teenage runaway in the TV movie Maybe Ill Come Home in the Spring. She began studying acting with famed coach Lee Strasberg, whod helped Marilyn Monroe combat stereotypes of her own. That changed my work, she once said. A few years later, Sally landed one of her signature roles as the title character in the TV movie Sybil, about a woman who suffers from multiple personality disorder. Sally was a standout in the emotionally grueling roleand she won an Emmy. So long, Sister Bertrille.
