Happy Birthday, Valerie Bertinelli!

    9
  • Valerie, who began entertaining us in the 1970s as the teenager Barbara Cooper in “One Day At A Time,” turns 52 today. These days, she’s playing Julia Moretti on the hit series “Hot In Cleveland,” also starring Betty White, Wendy Malick and Jane Leeves. But there are a few other things about her life that you might not know:

    She's A Great Runner

After years of struggling with her weight and health, Valerie ran the Boston Marathon in 2010, raising money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
  • She Starred In A True Reality Show “One Day At A Time,” which starred Bonnie Franklin as well as Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie, was based on the single-mom-and-daughter experience of Whitney Blake, the show’s writer. Blake’s daughter is actress Meredith Baxter.
  • She Had An A-List Boyfriend Valerie’s most famous relationship is probably her stormy marriage to rock star Eddie van Halen. But she dated another famous guy years before: Steven Spielberg.
  • She's Got Some A-List Co-stars This year, she’s getting a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Her fellow honorees include Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson.
  • Her Son Has A Unique Name She and Eddie have a son, Wolfgang, who plays in his dad’s band. Wolfgang van Halen is possibly only the second guy in history to have that name – the other being Mozart.
  • She's Very Loyal Although she and Eddie (at right in photo) broke up a while back, Valerie still plugs his records and tours on her website (www.valeriebertinelli.com).
  • She's Had A Lot Of Weight Problems Valerie, whose weight has gone up and down over the years, was a perfect spokesperson for diet giant Jenny Craig, regularly appearing at events to cook healthy versions of classic favorites (left). She’s been painfully honest about her issues with weight and wrote a book, “Losing It,” that chronicled her struggles. Her conclusion: "I've realized that I'm more important than food is. I love a big slice of pizza, but I love myself more. Being thin is about changing the way you think about yourself. It's about saying that you deserve to be healthy."
  • She's A Stress Exerciser Before marrying her current husband, financial adviser Tom Vitale (left), last year, Valerie was so nervous that she ran three miles on the treadmill just before the wedding.
  • She Would Really Appreciate A Visit From Her Higher Power Valerie believes in a Higher Power, and that the Power has visited her but should come around more often. "I have experienced days of inner peace and connectedness with a larger spirit—twice," she writes. "Why not more often?"
