  • Most Iconic Hair Styles Certain fashions and looks have made their marks in history—the fringed flapper getup of the 1920s, Marilyn Monroe’s white dress, the minidress of the 1960s, and these days we have Lady Gaga making style waves, especially with the meat dress she wore to the 2011 VMAs.

Over the decades, stars have made just as big an impression with some of their hair ‘dos. Some were glamorous, some timeless, and some even a bit wacky. But love ‘em or hate ‘em, these 10 hair styles are definitely going down in history:
  • Louise Brooks She was known as the “it girl” and silent-film flapper of the 1920s. But Louise Brooks is also noted for single-handedly popularizing the bob haircut, a bold, eccentric cut for her time. Many celebs today, like Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham and Selma Blair, love to rock Brooks’ short and chic ’do.
  • Bettie Page Bangs have been making a comeback in the last few years, whether they be side bangs like Reese Witherspoon’s or full-frontal fringe like the ‘do Sandra Bullock debuted at the 2011 Golden Globes. But the bangs trend all began with Bettie Page, the gorgeous dark-haired beauty who showcased her trademark fringe on magazine covers in the 1950s.
  • Marilyn Monroe It wasn’t just her iconic white dress that everyone loved. With her vibrant blonde hair and bright red lipstick, Marilyn Monroe was the definition of pinup perfection. The actress kept her tresses the same way throughout her entire career—short, curled, voluminous and blonde—and the world still hasn’t grown tired of it.
  • Farrah Fawcett Ah yes, the Farrah Fawcett hair wings. Fawcett was one of the original Charlie’s Angels, who blew the world away with her long blonde feathered locks. Throughout the ’70s, millions of women would lock themselves in their bathrooms for hours and work to perfect those flippy side wings.
  • Mia Farrow Mia Farrow took the scissors to her longer blonde locks right before her marriage to Frank Sinatra. But the world quickly fell in love with her super-short pixie cut. It’s an androgynous but still sexy look that’s still popular today—it remains the cut of choice for celebs like Jamie Lee Curtis and Halle Berry.
  • Elizabeth Taylor We’re pretty sure we knew why Elizabeth Taylor kept her chocolate-colored tresses cropped and curled for her entire life. The dark color helped separate her from Ms. Monroe in the ’50s. But in addition, the short ’do was ultra-femme and perfectly showed of her glamorous jeweled earrings.
  • Dorothy Hamill She captivated the world with her amazing skills on the ice, becoming a 1976 Olympic ice skating champion. But then there was her “Dorothy Hamill wedge” haircut, which seemed to sit perfectly still in a bowl-like fashion, even after multiple triple axles.
  • Princess Leia Princess Leia’s hair is by far one of the most recognizable ’dos in the cinematic world. And no, we’re definitely not suggesting that you wrap your hair around your ears in two pastry-like buns for date night, but hey, you’ve got to appreciate the “Leia Buns.”
  • “The Rachel” America’s favorite girl next door set the stage for one of the most iconic hairstyles of the ‘90s. The playfully highlighted layers that framed Jennifer Aniston’s face had Friends fans doing back flips to the hair salon to get the haircut. Interestingly enough, years after Aniston’s ten-year stint as Rachel Green on the sitcom, she called the style “the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen.” Aniston is currently rocking an angled bob, which her loyal fans also adore—we guess it’s the woman who makes the hair, not the other way around!
  • Kate Middleton No doubt about it, the Duchess of Cambridge is quickly becoming one of the world’s biggest style icons. But how Kate Middleton wears her hair speaks volumes about who she is. Her locks are long, brown, and almost always styled the same way—down and loosely curled away from her face. Even on her royal wedding day, she chose to skip the up-do and wear her hair as per usual. It’s a lovely, timeless look. Kate is truly the definition of stylish, poised and fabulous.
