During his time on the show, Cowell hurled hundreds of insults at contestants (even the finalists). Sometimes they were funny: If you had lived 2,000 years ago and sung like that, I think they would have stoned you. Fair enough; you need a thick skin in showbiz. But Cowell stepped way over the line when he told a timid young man, "Your dancing is terrible, the singing was horrendous, and you look like one of those creatures that live in the jungle with the massive eyes. What are they called? Bush babies." (Actual bush babies are small, extremely cute nocturnal monkeys.)The remark outraged Idol fans and the public; a few days later, Cowell tried to apologize but just couldnt bring himself to do it: If hes offended, then I apologize. I might never call anyone a bush baby again.

Next to Cowell, the most entertaining Idol judge was unquestionably pop singer Paula Abdul. Cowell snarked at contestants; Abdul gushed over them. Like siblings, they loved to disagree about almost everythingand yet they liked each other. Sort of. 4. The Sincere Apology
I think I was unfair to one person last night, Cowell said in Season 5. And I want to apologize because I dont think this person got the right appraisal. And that person is Katharine [McPhee]. The contestant was thrilled, and Ryan Seacrest said, That was a very classy move. Of course, he wasnt any nicer after that. As for McPhee, though she wasnt ultimately the winner, shes gone on to record three albums (the latest is coming out this month), so she must be doing something right.

There is one incident in recorded Idol history when Cowell was, well, nice to a singer who auditioned early in the process. Renaldo Lapuz, dressed in a white suit, white shoes and a white fur cape, sang Were Brothers Forever, a song he had written himself. Although it was normally the kind of performance that would have had Cowell wisecracking overtime, he said, I actually like youbut its going to be a no. Then he hugged the contestant goodbye. Was Cowells softer side brought out by the fact that Lapuzs hat had the word SIMON printed on it? Nah. We prefer to think that Cowells just a nice guy.
