Ten Infamous Hollywood Scandals

  • No one’s ever thought that stars lead angelic lives, but these ten stories managed to shock even the most hardened Hollywood observers:

    Ingrid Bergman

It’s hard to believe now, what with so many single actresses deciding to get pregnant, but in 1950, when Bergman, who was married, bore a child by director Roberto Rossellini, the reaction was swift and strong. There was a formal denunciation in the United States Senate, and Ed Sullivan wouldn’t have her on a guest on his show. Bergman got a divorced, married Rossellini, and had two more children with him, including actress Isabella Rossellini.
  • Elizabeth Taylor And Eddie Fisher Eddie Fisher and his wife Debbie Reynolds were America’s model for a happily married young couple – and then along came Taylor. The seductive English actress lured Fisher away from Reynolds, and the public was definitely on the side of the abandoned blonde ingénue.
  • Elizabeth Taylor And Richard Burton After a few years with Eddie Fisher, the man she stole from Debbie Reynolds, Taylor saw somebody she liked better. A lot better. She and British actor Richard Burton had a torrid romance during the filming of Cleopatra, and went on to get married, and divorced, and married, and divorced. Then they stopped doing that, much to the regret of the tabloids.
  • Roman Polanski In 1977, Polanski, the director of classics like Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown, was charged with statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. Although he had made a plea agreement with Los Angeles prosecutors, Polanski fled the country after he learned he could serve more jail time. In 2009, the U.S. tried to retrieve him from Switzerland, to no avail. All six of the original charges against him are still in effect.
  • Rock Hudson The scandal of Rock Hudson wasn’t that he was gay: Everyone in Hollywood, as well as many fans, knew that. But he was the first major figure to die from AIDS, although he did not say that’s what was making him sickness. Given the stigma associated with AIDS at the time, it’s perhaps understandable that he did that. His gaunt appearance shortly before his death in 1985 was shocking. But his friend Doris Day stood by him, as did Elizabeth Taylor, who later raised millions for AIDS charities.
  • Woody Allen And Soon-Yi Previn Probably we should have been forewarned when Allen cast himself as the lover of a teenage (Mariel Hemingway) in Manhattan (1979). But thirteen years later, the public was shocked by the romance between Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, the stepdaughter of his long-time romantic partner, Mia Farrow. It wasn’t even the 3 4-year age difference that mattered; it was that Allen had been a virtual father figure to Previn. Even though Previn and Allen remain married, the word for this all is Ewww.
  • OJ Simpson Simpson, a football legend, had acquired a good-guy reputation for his genial appearances in movies like the Naked Gun trilogy. But apparently that was a mask as well, and the June 12, 1994 killing of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, as well as her friend Ronald Goldman, caused a sensation of the type only seen every few decades. Still more shockingly, he was acquitted.
  • Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie Pitt has always had a good-guy reputation, and Jennifer Aniston seemed like the perfect wife for him. Boy, were we wrong. In 2005, Pitt and Jolie met while filming the thriller Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and shortly afterward, Pitt divorced Aniston. Jolie denied that she’d stolen Pitt from Aniston, but later admitted that they “fell in love” on the set.
  • Charlie Sheen The amazing thing about Charlie Sheen’s scandal is that it was really a series of scandals all blended into one huge episode of drug-fueled, crazed behavior. He lived with two women, one a porn star, and called them his “goddesses.” His ex-wife told police she believes Sheen is “insane.” And then there was his “tour” after being canned from Two And A Half Men. The title: “My Violent Torpedo Of Truth/Defeat Is Not An Option.” If you say so, Charlie.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger And Maria Shriver The word ‘shock’ doesn’t begin to cover it. If asked, most people would have said, yes, maybe Arnold was unfaithful to Maria during their 25-year marriage. And yes, they argued – so does every couple. But an affair with a housekeeper? The unacknowledged son? The housekeeper’s tearful confession? If you saw it on a reality show, you wouldn’t believe it. Unfortunately for Maria, it was all true. It’s no wonder that the couple’s kids have stopped using their father’s last name.
