Ten Things About Jennifer Grey Beyond Dancing with the Stars

Five days before Dirty Dancing was released, Grey and then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick were in a two-car crash in Northern Ireland, where they were vacationing. The crash killed two women in the other car. Broderick, who was at the wheel, paid a $175 fine, which the victims families called a travesty of justice. The tragedy deeply affected both Grey and Broderick. "The juxtaposition of that deep sorrow, the survivor's guilt, and then being celebrated as the new big thing just didn't jibe, Grey told People magazine recently. My head was never the same; my ambition was never the same."

After Dirty Dancing, Grey, self-conscious about her pronounced nose, had a rhinoplasty. The procedure was so botched that she had to have another one to repair it. And although the end result wasnt bad-looking in itself, it altered Greys appearance to the point that she was nearly unrecognizable. Casting directors balked at hiring someone who no longer looked like herself. I went into the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous, shes said. Although its well-known that Grey is the daughter of legendary Broadway entertainer Joel Grey, her grandfather, Mickey Katz, was almost as well-known in his day. Katz was a clarinetist who specialized in the Jewish musical genre known as klezmer. In the mid-1950s, he sold hundreds of thousands of recordsa rare accomplishment in a specialty category. Grey toured with his fathers band when he was sixteen.

Three years before Dancing, the two starred in Red Dawn, a Reagan-era thriller about a Cuban/Soviet invasion of a small Colorado town. Both Swayze and Grey play young resistance fighters. The movie also marked Charlie Sheens feature film debut.

Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the mesmerizing dance scenes in Dirty Dancing, also did the numbers for Michael Jacksons farewell This Is It tour. After Jackson died, Ortega assembled rehearsal footage and issued the movie This Is It.

Greys husband, Clark Gregg, plays good-guy Agent Phil Coulson in the mega-hits Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and is scheduled to appear in another Marvel Comics spectacular, Thor. He and Grey have a daughter, Stella, who was born in 2001.

Grey played Matthew Brodericks little sister in the classic Ferris Buellers Day Off and was briefly engaged to him. Parker unsuccessfully auditioned for the Dirty Dancing role and eventually married Broderick. And Clark Gregg, Greys husband, had a guest appearance on Parkers series Sex and the City. Luckily, everyone gets along.
