A lot of boomer celebs do more than just star in movies, play roles on TV, or make hit records. They make extra money by appearing in commercials – not for products they’ve made but for products they implicitly believe in. Take a look at the stars who want you to buy what they’re selling:
Henry Winkler, One Reverse Mortgage
In the midst of the country’s ongoing home-ownership crisis, the former Fonzie on “Happy Days” is encouraging viewers 62 and older to “enjoy retirement your way.” The key, says Winkler, 66: a reverse mortage – i.e. you “lend” the equity in your home to an organization or company, and they pay you back while you’re still in the house. Although we love the Fonz, check out www.hud.gov before making your decision. -
Julianne Moore, Talbots
When the tasteful though occasionally dowdy Talbots clothing company decided to take their line in a new direction, they chose Julianne Moore, 50, whose stunning boomer looks lifted the line to a whole new level. On Moore, a $189 satin dress looks like a couture style. -
Raquel Welch, Foster Grants
With a multimillion-dollar campaign last year for Foster Grant sunglasses, Raquel Welch, 71, returned to her old stomping grounds: She was a spokeswoman for the iconic brand in the 1960s. As it did decades ago, the campaign asked the question, “Who’s behind those Foster Grants?” Why, it’s Raquel, still looking good almost fifty years later. -
Dan Marino, Nutrisystem
Over the years, football legend Dan Marino, 50, has done commercials for products as varied as Isotoner gloves and Blockbuster. Now he’s telling guys across the country to man up and lose some weight. The product he’s pitching: Nutrisystem For Men, a packaged-food plan that keeps it simple for guys who, Marino says, “don’t want to go to meetings.” Take that, WeightWatchers! -
Whoopi Goldberg, Poise Pads
No one else but Whoopi, 55, could have done a series of ads alleging that Cleopatra, the Mona Lisa and the Statue of Liberty had Intermittent Bladder Leakage. Of course, this is best dealt with by wearing Poise Pads, thus gracefully avoiding the “pfft” and “spritz” that bedevil so many women. Thanks, Whoopi. We get the idea. -
Andie MacDowell, L'Oreal
Macdowell, 53, who earlier in her career modeled for "Vogue" and was photographed by Richard Avedon, is a perfect and dignified spokewoman for the drugstore-with-class L’Oreal line. Her ads for anti-aging products and haircolor aren’t too big on talk, but her looks speak for themselves. -
Janet Jackson, Blackglama
OK, so fur isn’t as popular in Hollywood as it used to be. But Janet Jackson had no hesitation about rocking a motorcycle jacket made of “ranch-raised” mink in the latest Blackglama ad featuring the classic slogan “What Becomes A Legend Most?” Well, at least it’s guaranteed to shield all wardrobe malfunctions. -
Kim Cattrall, Olay
It’s only natural that Cattrall, 55, who played the seductive Samantha on “Sex And The City,” would emphasize her physical attributes in this languid ad for Olay. “How do I keep this body?” she purrs. “By doing shocking things” – like switching to Olay Anti-Aging Body Wash. (We think a strenuous fitness routine helps, too.) -
Sam Waterston, TD Ameritrade
To plug TD Ameritrade, Waterston, 70, draws on his tough-but-fair "Law and Order" image as prosecutor Jack McCoy. Striding toward the viewer, he talks about “problems” with other companies that offer online stock trading. Really, Sam? You think there are problems with some financial companies? We're shocked. -
Marie Osmond, Nutrisystem
Osmond, 52, who lost 50 pounds on Nutrisystem, has been one of the eating plan’s best known celebrity spokespeople. In her pitch, Osmond talks about her mother, who suffered strokes because she didn’t eat well, and tells how she herself feels healthier than ever. Even if you don’t believe in prepackaged food plans, it’s an effective sell. -
Carrie Fisher, Jenny Craig
Yes, Jenny Craig has has other celebrity spokespeople like Valerie Bertinelli, but Carrie Fisher, 55, is a definite departure from the typical bubbly spokewomen for many diet programs. At the start of her adventure, Fisher spoke seriously about her weight gain, admitting that she’d never liked the way she looked, and laid out a specific goal of losing 50 pounds. Like Marie Osmond, she did it.
