On October 20,1968five years after John F. Kennedys death, the world's most famous and respected woman Jackie Kennedy shocked the world by marrying Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, who was known as the Golden Greek. . The engagement was announced days before by the brides mother in the terse statement: "My daughter, Mrs. John F Kennedy, is planning to marry Mr. Aristotle Onassis." Her engagement ring was a 40-carat diamond. Millions who had adored Jackie were stunned and dismayed. For him, she was the ultimate trophy wife while he gave her the financial security she sought.

They married after Bobby Kennedy, who in 1968 was running for President, was shot in Los Angeles. Jackie told her friends she wanted to leave the country to protect her children. After the two married they spent much of their time on the Greek island of Skorpios, an island Onassis owned. But Jackie, then nicknamed Jackie O, was still hounded by the paparazzi and their marriage was never very close. Jackie shopped and shopped while Onassis complained about her big spending and was comforted by his longtime mistress opera star Maria Callas. He died in Paris in 1975. After his funeral, she released a statement about Ari. "Aristotle Onassis rescued me at a moment when my life was engulfed with shadows. He brought me into a world where one could find both happiness and love. We lived through many beautiful experiences together which cannot be forgotten, and for which I will be eternally grateful."Jackie, now quite wealthy, went on to live a far more independent life. She died in May 1994 and is buried next to JFK in Arlington.
