Perky Katie Couric: Not Ready For Prime Time

Why Katie Couric Flopped

At last, Katie Couric has officially announced what gossips in TV land have been talking about for months.  Couric, the first solo woman nightly news anchor and the highest paid, will be leaving CBS Evening News in June.  So why did Katie flop?

1. If you are perky, are called perky, and have made a big-bucks career out of being perky, you can’t stop being perky even if you change your time slot. She didn’t have and couldn’t get the nightly news gravitas that Diane Sawyer has.     2.Though she’s supposed to be a top-notch interviewer, the only memorable interview Couric did in her five years on the nightly news was the one with Sarah Palin that turned into a SNL skit. And Couric made the most of it. Kind of catty.    3. She never had high Q (likability) ratings even when she was on the Today Show. Guess CBS didn’t remember that when they were writing that big salary check. It was Matt Lauer who had the high Q ratings and still does.     4.As things got bumpy,  Couric began to have a contentious relationship with CBS and the CBS news staff, even complaining about her bosses in print.  And her parting shot: She confirmed her departure, not on her own broadcast but to People Magazine, before leaving to cover William and Kate’s wedding.  CBS in a statement said, “We feel it’s time for a change.”  And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.    5. Well, even we have to admit that following Dan Rather certainly didn’t help.
