If you are taking statins, niacin or fibric acid derivatives you should be getting periodic liver function tests. Because liver problems may develop without symptoms you should have your liver function tested about six weeks after taking a new drug, and then again every three to six months for the first year of treatment, particularly if the dose is increased. Statins usually increase liver enzymes which can lead to permanent liver damage if the increase is too much. Also, drugs such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) and niacin increase the risk of liver problems even more in people who take statins.
