Will You Outlive Your Nest Egg?
I thought I had everything planned. We were set with a decent retirement. We saved and invested--just the right amount.
Now they're saying I could live into my 80s. When we made the plan, I was supposed to live until I was 70 and my wife was going to live a few years longer than that. Now, it looks like our nest egg isn't going to be enough.
So what am I supposed to do? Work 'til I drop? It's not going to be a simple matter of cutting back on the way we live, either. You know, this is about more than canceling a trip to Europe or something. We may have to squeeze 20 years of expenses out of 10 years of resources.
Will you have enough stashed away to live longer than you might expect? Or are you planning for an active, healthy retirement without any catastrophes? How would you handle crises in your retirement?
The above stories are composites developed from ThirdAgers' thoughts about important midlife issues. We often see these concerns and emotions expressed in online forums and chats, focus groups, advisory panels, and interviews. We'd like you to contribute, anonymously or not, your stories for possible inclusion in future Heartbeats.
