Are You Saving Enough for Retirement?
It didn't hit me until my last birthday: I've got to get serious about retirement money.
We were out for dinner with friends. Ed was talking about how he and Margaret have been putting a few bucks aside each week. When they were first married, they taped a magazine picture of a beach in Hawaii to a jar. They put their pocket change into it and added some extra every month. He says they hardly missed the money.
I've contributed to a 401(k), but just a few percent. Every time I got a raise, I intended to boost the amount I set aside. But there was always something: a new roof, the kids' braces, you know. I just never got around to it. We managed to set enough aside to get the kids started in college.
This time, I mean it: I'm really going to save enough for retirement.
Are you on track with retirement savings? When did you start putting money aside? How have you focused your thinking about saving for retirement?
