Brow Lift and Forehead Lift Cosmetic Surgery

Creams, dermabrasion, peels, injections: if you are looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on your face, there is a world of options at your fingertips. More and more women between the ages of 40 and 70 are turning to brow lifts to reduce wrinkles and lines on the forehead and around the eyes.

Brow and face lifts are a relatively common procedure and appear consistently in the yearly round up of the top five plastic surgeries in the US. In 2004, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported almost 500,000 eyelid and facelift procedures, and a majority of those procedures were performed on women.

During a brow lift, a plastic surgeon makes incisions along the hairline or ears and uses and endoscope to reposition the muscle beneath the surface of the skin. The result is usually a smoother, tighter appearance that reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Brow lifts can also reposition a sagging brow line to brighten the eyes.

Brow lifts occur under general or intravenous anesthesia, and though they can be performed in an outpatient setting, brow lifts require weeks-long recovery time and come with many risks. What is it that has women spending thousands of dollars out-of-pocket on treatment to perk up their faces?

Dr. Vivian Diller, author of Face It: What Women Really Feel As Their Looks Change, isn't surprised by the high numbers of plastic surgery procedures performed on women. "We're living in a youth- and beauty-obsessed culture, and as our looks change, we're feeling all sorts of complicated feelings."

For some women, wrinkles serve as a badge of honor. Every line tells a story of triumph or sadness. But for other women, lines and creases start to represent a shift that they are not ready to accept. When youth is so readily associated with beauty, and wrinkles so readily associated with age, it can be difficult for a woman to feel beautiful and valuable without looking young. If you are considering a brow lift, be realistic about the results. It's unlikely that your 50-year-old face will be a mirror image of your 20-year-old face. Consider the risks. Like any surgical procedure, there is the risk of infection, scarring, nerve damage, and negative reaction to the anesthesia.Women shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of their decisions about their looks. Whether you decide to embrace your face or do some nipping and tucking, remember that your self-worth is multifaceted.
