Dr. Gary Monheit, a professor of Dermatology at the University of Alabama, says when looking for a good surgeon it's very important to choose someone who treats you with respect. As Monheit says, "A good surgeon will allow the patient to talk freely about his or her goals and expectations with surgery and will explain in plain practical terms what the surgery will accomplish."
He says today's approach to improving aging skin involves both medical and topical therapy before and after surgery. A good dermatologic surgeon will not only perform the cosmetic surgery, but also educate the patient about skin protection and care.
Monheit recommends talking to your dermatologist about the new medical procedures available for skin resurfacing, filling and liposuction when deciding what's right for you. Many procedures can be done with just a local anesthetic, but you'll want to know all the risks involved, as well as the benefits.
