Plastic surgeries nationwide dipped in 2009 due largely to the economy, but they're up overall in the past 10 years, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The society said 12.5 million cosmetic surgeries were done in the United States in 2009, down 1 percent from 2008 but up 69 percent since 2000. Nearly 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were done in 2009.
Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures rose 1 percent, to nearly 11 million, in 2009, and were up 99 percent since 2000. The top ones in 2009 were:
- Botulinum toxic type A (Botox), 4.8 million.
- Soft tissue fillers, 1.7 million.
- Chemical peels, 1.1 million.
- Microdermabrasion (removing dead skin), 910,000.
- Laser hair removal, 893,000.
Cosmetic surgical procedures fell 9 percent in 2009, with more than 1.5 million performed. Surgical procedures are down 20 percent since 2000. The top five surgical procedures in 2009 were:
- Breast enlargement, 289,000.
- Nose reshaping, 256,000.
- Liposuction, 198,000.
- Tummy tuck, 115,000.
Reconstructive plastic surgery, which improves function and appearance to abnormalities, increased 5 percent in 2009. The top five reconstructive procedures were:
- Tumor removal, 3.9 million.
- Laceration repair, 332,000.
- Scar removal, 171,000.
- Hand surgery, 110,000.
- Maxillofacial (upper jaw and face) surgery, 90,000.
The group said that as the economy rebounds, it expects more patients and baby boomers, in particular, to seek procedures such a liposuction, tummy tucks, eyelid surgery and breast enhancement.
