Facing Up to Life -- And the Weather

The three W's -- work, worry, and winter -- can play havoc with the complexion at this time of year, and it's worth spending a bit of time facing up to the problem. British makeup artist Sara Raeburn offers what she says are some "foolproof tips" for beating those facial concerns.

First off, she says, the answer is not in piling on the face paint. "Resist putting on too much makeup -- you will only look more tired, not less." For pink or gritty eyes, feel free to use eyedrops.

Raeburn suggests avoiding heavy concealers and using light-reflecting formulas instead. For dark circles, try an eye cream or gel that is designed to reduce them. She warns, "an anti-aging, anti-wrinkle eye cream won't necessarily do the job."

For what she calls an "optical facelift," Raeburn says highlighter should be applied to the temples, cheekbones and brow bones, as well as under the arch of the eyebrows. "Only wear mascara on your upper lashes," she advises, "and don't apply eyeshadow or eyeliner under your eyes."
