My friend and I visited this wonderful retirement center to visit her 87 yearold former neighbor Gerry. I swear, it looked like a hotel when we first pulled into the visitor's parking area. All that was missing were the parking valets. This is a place that features self sufficient living, congregate and nursing care. They also have an Alzheimer's care unit here. Gerry said that several hundred people live in the complex but they do have 35 vacancies right now. Yes, even this place has suffered from the housing market crash. He bought his one bedroom condo 10 years ago for quite a reasonable price. He has everything taken care of..limo service to shops, banks and stores, daytime excursions, a theatre, ballroom/weight room, indoor swimming pool, deli/general store and some of the best food served in five different dining rooms. As his guest, we went to the 'Traditional' dining room and sat down to some of the best food I've had. Some of the restaurants I've eaten at pale in comparison to what we had here. The menu combines lunch/dinner entrees. You want an omelette? You can get one. Parmesancrusted Catfish, Penne and Matballs..there was quite a list. My friend and I had the 5 oz. Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon with sauteed onions. It came perfectly cooked as we ordered, medium rare. I had the Yukon potatoes and a trip to the salad bar. The salad bar offered Spinach and Micro greens and a fine selection of fruits and veggies. Yes, they had prunes and apple butter too! For dessert I had the Apple pie with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream. Exceptional. I wish that all retirees could live in such a facility with dignity and grace befitting their contribution to life. It's a shame that some places operate under the auspices of care givers' but give or care very little.
