The time WILL come when you know of a family member OR have to put a family member in a nursing home or assisted living facility. The Retreat at Church Ranch is an "Assisted Living Community" that worked out for several years. It has some good things going for it: Small with only about 55 residents "Hotel" like decor w/th deluxe lobby Nice dining room with decent food Great activities director Private rooms Friendly onsite hairdresser Small dogs allowed Reasonable pricing Better value compared to other facilities Patience working with "hostile" senior woman (Envision this scenario: two 80+ women, sitting in the dining room shouting obscenties to each other "Fyou," "No, Fyou, b*&ch" Hilarious, but true. A geri psych hold was mentioned more than once. On the other hand, some drawbacks: Absent or nonexistant staff on the weekends Director MIA at times (during the week) Awkward parking lot Big hallways, small rooms Isolated rooms (better for privacy; not so good for safety) Neglected parakeets sitting in dark corner in lobby Knowitall, nurse practitioner affiliated with facilty "No, I don't care what YOU want, I want the best for pt.;" Well, the pt is confused and demented and doesn't know what she wants (or where she is or what the date is) Overall, a pretty good experience. However, the end experience was left on a bad note. Yes, the relative needed to move on to an Alzheimer's facility; we more than agree. The director "gave out" our contact info and we had every persistant "Jack" and "Jill" calling from all parts of the metro area when we had specified a certain location. It went on for days. We had a certain "gentleman" affiliated with the director who was especially rude and arrogant. It was a real turn off.
