My 4 year old son saw Dr. Collins today, and because of the set-up at this dental facility, the parents only watch through a window occassionally during patient care. My 4 year old seemed fine, so I let him go back to the chair alone. Twice in the hour that he was in the treatment room (yes, an entire hour), I checked on him and he was completely alone (meaning no one was directly working with/talking to him). When a hygenist called me back to discuss the treatment plan, I realized that Dr. Collins had already finished, and my son was done with the appointment. Even as a teenager, my mother was always called back when the dentist had found something, or any type of follow-up was needed. To make matters worse, it wasn't a simple "he has a cavity, and we need to fill it," which I would have been fine with. He actually has a cavity between/on 2 teeth, and they want to CROWN his 2 teeth with 1 crown. I had never heard of this, and despite her efforts, the hygenist wasn't answering the questions as well as I wanted. I was frustrated, disappointed, feeling like a bad mother, but couldn't wait to speak to the dentist herself because she was busy, and I was holding a maxed-out 16 month old in my arms in addition to the antsy 4 year old, so we just couldn't wait any longer. I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion, but in a way, I don't even feel like I really got a first opinion considering I didn't even talk to the dentist herself. I felt that she was a little unprofessional leaving it up to someone else to explain treatment that in my opinion, isn't as straightforward as just a filling. I also think that I should have been called back when she was checking his teeth after the cleaning. He is only 4.
