A physician assistant or a physician associate is a person licensed to practice medicine under limited supervision of a physician. The assistant helps prevent, maintain, and treat illness and injury by providing a range of health care services usually performed by the primary physician. They conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, give preventive health care counseling, assist surgery, and write prescriptions.Physician assistants are not medical assistants, who have limited post-secondary training and are restricted to performing administrative and clinical tasks under direct supervision of physicians and other health care professionals.
