Pulmonology Information:

Pulmonary medicine, also known as pulmonology, is a medical specialty that concentrates on diseases of the respiratory tract and respiratory disease. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, though it is associated with intensive care medicine because of patients that need mechanical ventilation to breathe.

In diagnosing a disease, the pulmonologist will review hereditary diseases, exposure to toxins, exposure to infectious agents, and autoimmune diathesis. Physical diagnostics include inspection of hands, chest wall, and respiratory rate; palpation of the cervical lymph nodes, trache and chest wall movement; percussion of lung fields for dullness or hyperresonance; ascultation for unusual breathing. Conditions treated by pulmonologists include pulmonary hypertension, tuberculosis, cancer, and more.
