Hepatology is a division of medicine that is concerned with the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, and their disorders. It is considered a sub-specialty of gastroenterology. Diseases within hepatology typically are related to viral hepatitis and alcohol, but also include enzyme defects, fever, systematic diseases, pancreatitis, and gastrointestinal bleeding.Hepatologists conduct important procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) which combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat problems in biliary or pancreatic ductal areas; transheptic pancreato-cholangiography (TPC) which is a process that helps doctors see the biliary tract, and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPSS) in which the doctor creates the shunt in the jugular vein to treat cirrhosis.
