Neonatology Information:

Neonatology, a sub-specialty of pediatrics, focuses on the care of newborn infants and their hospital-based care in a neonatal intensive care unit. Babies who require neonatal care are sick and require close monitoring and care because of their prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, birth defects, sepsis, or birth asphyxias.

Neonatologists may also work as the newborn's general pediatrician, and can follow the infants for months or possibly even years after their discharge from the hospital to evaluate the long term effects of their early life health problems.
