A neurologist diagnoses and treats such disorders, but is also involved in clinical research, clinical trials, and even basic research and translational research. In diagnosing a condition, the neurologist may review the patient's medical history with the condition in mind. The patient takes a neurological exam, which tests their mental status, function of nerves, strength, coordination, reflexes, and sensation.Related conditions and overlapping areas include head trauma, headache, cerebral palsy, sciatica, sleep disorders, Parkinson's, dementia, and more. However, mental illnesses are traditionally classified separately and are treated by psychiatrists, not neurologists.
