Obstetrics is a division of medicine which involves caring for women's reproductive tracts, as well as their children during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Almost all obstetricians are also gynecologists.

Emergencies during pregnancy must also be dealt with. Such situations include ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, fetal distress, shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture, prolapsed cord, obstetrical hemorrhage, and puerperal sepsis.

During pregnancy, the obstetrician can do a number of tasks, including monitoring the progress of labor, accelerate labor, provide pain relief, surgically assist, or perform a Caesarean section.
