Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is a disorder caused by autoimmune distruction of the insulin secreting cells of the pancreas resulting in the body's inability to produce sufficient insulin to meet bodily needs. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows the body to use sugar for energy. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) from the carbohydrate food you eat cannot enter cells. This causes glucose to build up in the blood, leaving your body cells and tissues starved for energy. While a variety of tissue transplantation techniques are under development and some genetically-based treatments have been proposed, at this point in time, the only widely-available treatment for type 1 diabetes is the injection of insulin.

Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is a malignant growth of the cells that make up the thyroid.

The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the lower neck. It is shaped a bit like a butterfly, with a thin central body (or isthmus) and two â??wingsâ? or lobes. Like all endocrine glands, the thyroid produces hormones-chemicals that circulate through the blood to direct functioning in other organs of the body. The thyroid is made up of two types of cells, follicular cells and C cells. The follicular cells produce thyroid hormone, which is involved in regulating body temperature, heart rate, and the body's use of energy. The C cells produce calcitonin, which is involved in the processing and use of calcium throughout the body.

Hyperparathyroidism
The parathyroid glands are four small glands in the neck. They make parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH raises the level of calcium in the blood.

In hyperparathyroidism too much PTH is secreted. This causes high levels of calcium in the blood. High calcium is known as hypercalcemia. The condition is classified as being: Primary hyperparathyroidism-most common form, a benign tumor of the parathyroid gland makes too much PTH on its own Secondary hyperparathyroidism-occurs in patients with long-standing Kidney Failure or a vitamin D deficient state (very common) Tertiary hyperparathyroidism-also occurs in patients with very long-standing kidney failure, very often on dialysis
