What is a Nursing Home?

Nursing homes provide long-term care for patients with injuries, disabilities, or chronic conditions. These live-in communities offer all the personal assistance and services of assisted living facilities with the addition of around-the-clock nursing care.

In general, nursing home staff members are available for 24-hour supervision to help elderly or disabled patients maintain safety. They assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, transferring, using the toilet, eating, and walking.

Most nursing homes also offer complex medical care for injured or acutely ill patients. These residents often require the services of a licensed nurse to assist in physical, speech, occupational, or rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness.
