Ladies, lets face it, were all going to go through menopause, if youre not already. So, we at ThirdAge have some excellent tips to keep in mind when youre going through your inevitable Change Of Life.
Change Up Your Diet
Due to the lack of estrogen being produced in the body, our bones become brittle resulting in osteoporosis or loss of bone density, making women more susceptible to fractures. So Choose low-fat dairy products high in calcium to keep your bones strong. Also, lower your saturated fat intake, which can usually be found in red meats. Instead replace the bad fat with something healthier like poultry or better yet, fish which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.
Avoid Synthetic Fibers
Night sweats are inevitable. If your bedding is made from synthetic fibers, it may be causing you to sweat more. Try sleeping under blankets instead of that duvet to try and reduce night time sweats as well. One more thing, keep a change of dry PJ's next to the bed, you make up drenched, so the quick change will help you get back to sleep in no time.
Try Alternative Therapies
Aromatherapy, acupuncture, massages and reflexology are just a few of the different types of therapies that can be a big help in getting you through the added stress you begin to deal with once menopause begins. Homeopathic remedies such as natural yam cream and soy along with black cohosh capsules are food based phytoestrogen, or plant based estrogen that help to reduce the severity of symptoms in a more natural food based way.
Dress Comfortably
Hot flashes are going to happen, so be sure to dress accordingly. Be sure to wear easily removable layers. Also be sure to avoid the skin tight stuff like yoga pants. Unless of course youre in that yoga class!
Exercise
Ladies, I dont mean heading to the gym and pumping iron. Im talking about different types of gentle exercise, like walking has been known to help your body release energy. By doing this, it makes it easier to get to sleep as well as preventing other conditions like osteoporosis.
Just Accept It
The first step towards dealing with menopause is understanding that its going to happen to you no matter what. The sooner you realize this, it will make battling that hot flash much easier to deal with. Breathing exercises and Yoga are just a few things to consider to help you relieve the tension.
