Online Dating Scams

Online dating is now one of the easiest ways to meet new people and develop relationships. Each day, more and more people are joining the search. Many of them end up finding their matches and go on to live long, love-filled, happy lives.  On the other hand, there are those who prey on the vulnerable. Online scammers have become a major problem for the online dating community because it is hard to determine if the person with whom you're communicating is real or not. We’re going to be taking a look at some of the online dating scams that have victimized.

First and foremost, let’s understand that even though online dating scams take on a variety of forms, the one thing they have in common is the most obvious: money.  If the subject of money comes up quickly with your new online “friend," then proceed with caution. These scammers are smart, patient, and worst of all willing to break your heart in order to get paid.

In some situations, the scammers will skip all the pleasantries and ask for money straight out. One of the better known scams is the “Nigerian” scam and its different variations. This is a scam where your new potential love will be living in or is “stuck” in some African country.  They will say that they have a lot of money in the form of money orders that they cannot cash there. They offer to send them to you so you can cash them at your bank and then wire the money back. The money orders will be forgeries and you may even find yourself charged by your bank for submitting them. However, they can take several weeks to process, so many people fall for these online dating scams and wire the money before they find out what is truly going on.

Another trick is that if the person you met online does live far away, they will act as if they want to come and visit you, but only if you pay their travel expenses. But this won’t bring you love either because that person will just pocket the money and never get onboard that plane to come see you. Some may say that these scams are ridiculous and that people should be able to use their common sense when it comes to determining if they are in fact being scammed. But what those skeptics don’t realize is that a lot of people are willing to ignore common sense in the name of love. So, if you are thinking about giving online dating a try, proceed with caution. Don’t let the desire for love keep you from paying attention to your gut instincts in order to determine whether or not your new match is in it for your heart or your wallet.
