Online Dating Tips for Boomer Women

  • Reports are coming from online dating sites that the fastest growing segments of members on their sites are people over the age of 50. Let’s face it, online dating is the new hot spot for boomers who wouldn’t be caught dead trying to pick up someone at the bar. But that doesn’t mean online dating is the only way to meet new men. Still, if you do decide to take the leap into the online dating pool, then go in prepared with these tips:
  • Be the Boss Control the experience. Set some personal guidelines about how to integrate online dating into your life. Questions like “how many hours a day will I spend looking for someone?” (Warning! This can become addictive) or “How many people will I respond to?” As you meet and greet with your new matches, you want to keep things your emotions in check. Be aware of what you are and aren’t willing to do with your new matches in the beginning stages. Be open to new things though, have fun, but be responsible at the same time.
  • Stand Out! In case you didn’t know this, you have some competition! As women age, the female to male ratio grows further and further apart. Statistics show that it’s as much as 11 women to every man over 50! So when you get online, be sure to stand up and stand out! Make sure the pictures of you are current and great (you don’t want to lie aboutappearances, though. That’s not a good way to start things out.) Your profile needs to be unique and speak to the men who are looking at upi. Each time you communicate with someone, be sure it captures how magical you are. Show your personality and tell him you’re interested. Don’t just say “Hi!” in your subject line, if you do, your message will more than likely end up getting deleted.
  • Be Honest Because you’re online, it doesn’t give you the freedom to lie about yourself and hope to still find your dream man. The goal here is to actually meet a good guy who’s compatible with you. The top complaint from men when it comes to women they meet online is that the ladies are putting up pics that are a little bit outdated, to say the least. Don’t do it. Post current pics of yourself. It’s going to be a big waste of time if you don’t put up current photos. On that note, you need to be clear in your profile descriptions about what you’re looking for. Whether you’re looking for a casual fling or a husband, put it out there. You don’t want to set yourself up for disaster when you’re dating a guy that you feel a connection with, then you find out he’s not looking for the same things you are.
  • Maybe a Makeover? When’s the last time you updated your look? Have you changed the way you do your hair or make-up? Bought any new clothes lately? While it may be a good idea to work on some of these things in order to find a new suitor, but more importantly, it’s also a great way to restore some confidence in yourself. Healthy women who show self-confidence are going to be the ones who get the men they want. Head out to the local mall and get yourself a free make-up session. Change your hairstyle and get some new clothes. Your date will be quick to notice if you have enough confidence in yourself, and if you don’t, then don’t expect a second date.
  • Check Your Baggage Whatever you do, DO NOT drag your divorce, financial issues, or your latest battle with gout into the conversation for a while. Remember the woman you are today is not the girl you were 20 years ago when you were probably dating on a regular occasion. Be sure to review with yourself what you want out of your “perfect man” and what it will take for him to get that second and third date with you. It’s important to take time to ground yourself and figure out who you are and what you want in your life today. Either do it by yourself, with a friend, or with a coach. But do it no matter what.
