Don't Get Depressed This Fall

Elevate Your Autumn Mood

If you’re like me, when the days start getting shorter you feel a bit blue, unmotivated, and lethargic. It’s the same for approximately 20 million more Americans. And women are twice to three times more likely to suffer from the winter blues than men.  Although you can’t do anything about holding onto light-filled summer, there are proven ways to fight the seasonal blahs. Here’s how: GET MOVING. The effects of a good workout with its release of endorphins will keep you upbeat for hours. If you’re too lazy to get to the gym, a stroll in the outdoors, preferably when the sun is highest, will do the trick to energize you. REGULATE YOUR SLEEP.  Keep your bedroom light on a timer to turn on a half-hour before you wake. By mimicking daylight, this may help you awaken at your regular time each morning even though it’s still dark outside. CUT DOWN ON SUGAR.  And avoid refined and processed foods. Try to pack your diet with complex carbohydrates, including brown rice, veggies, fruits, and don’t forget your eight glasses of water each day. These healthy foods provide your body and mind with nutrients that stabilize your blood sugar, which can also affect mood and energy level.

GRAB THE SUN WHEN YOU CAN. It not only provides vitamin D, sunshine releases neurotransmitters in the brain that boost mood. Keep your shades up during the day to let more light in. Sit near windows in restaurants and cafes. Try changing the light bulbs in your house to "full spectrum" bulbs. These mimic natural light and actually have the same effect on your mind as the real thing.

NIX ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE. Staying in with a nice glass of wine or two may seem like a good idea when the weather is chilly. But alcohol is actually a depressant.Rather than improving your mood, it only makes it worse. Avoiding alcohol when you’re already down is the best choice.

TREAT YOURSELF. Having something to look forward to can keep anyone motivated.  It doesn’t have to be an expensive trip to the Bahamas (though that would be nice). Lunch with several friends, a facial, hosting a brunch or dinner party, or tickets to the movies are all effective ways to bump up your mood.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.  If you have a severe case of the seasonal blues, speak with your doctor about prescription antidepressant medications like Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft. There’s also evidence to suggest the over- the-counter medication, St. John's wort, is effective in helping to relieve symptoms. But be sure to check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medicines or supplements.
