My family has a history of diabetes. I've been watching my weight and getting regular checkups. Are their any foods or supplements that might help, too?
Diabetes has become a major health concern in this country. The risk for diabetes is often tied to weight but just recently a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that low intakes of calcium and vitamin D may be risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes especially if it runs in your family and you have glucose intolerance or pre-diabetes. Supplementing the diet with both calcium (1200 milligrams) and vitamin D (1000 mg) as an act of prevention is worth considering.
